5 Free Things To Do In Glasgow

Looking for something to do in Glasgow that’s not going to break the bank? Well, there’s plenty of free things you can do in and around the city which make a great day out.

This is just a few things to do that we’d recommend but there’s plenty more free options out there. If you’ve got any recommendations of your own, pop them in the comments and look out for more list posts in future.

This is a favourite as it has stunning architecture in a building that has 22 galleries covering things like animals, Ancient Egypt and plenty more. With its family friend atmosphere, its perfect for a day out but also good for couples or even going solo to admire the art. This is a must see location and which is free to everyone with no booking required, just head over during its opening hours which are listed on the website. Sometimes there’s events on here too and details of these can be found on the website.

Riverside Museum

This stunning museum is the first purpose built museum created by Glasgow Life in the 21st century. Many people will still refer to this as the transport museum as you can see old buses, cars, trams and even subway carts. You can see how Glasgow played its part in both transport and technology in this stunning venue. If you fancy a wee day out filled with history then visit the Riverside Museum. It’s free to enter with no booking required and you can find out about any events on their website.

GoMA is home to Glasgow’s contemporary art collection and includes work from emerging artists. It has a wide range of art work including paintings, sculptures, installations, videos, and digital art. There’s both permanent and temporary exhibitions here and GoMA hosts workshops, talks and events for the community to enjoy. GoMA is free to access and you don’t need to book. Simply drop in and enjoy the library, cafe and shop during opening hours.

Glasgow Botanic Gardens

These gardens can be enjoyed all year round but they’re particularly beautiful when you visit on a sunny day. Discover a collection of over 9000 plants in and out of their glasshouses. Staff are on hand if you have any questions about the plants on display. There are various opening times which include ‘The Botanics Tearoom’ which is perfect for a spot of lunch.

Whitelee Windfarm

This ones a little different from what we’ve mentioned already but its a great day out if you’re looking to get the steps in. Now with a visitor centre that’s managed by Glasgow Science Centre, Whitelee Windfarm lets you learn about renewable energy before walking alongside the huge turbines with routes that go for miles. If you don’t want to walk, there’s also a bus tour available. You can always access the site for parking and walking but the visitor centre has opening hours which can be found on their website.
